People have been binge-watching “Friends” seemingly eons before we were talking about a pandemic.
So when news arrived of a “Friends” reunion on HBO Max, diehard fans were ecstatic. Then COVID-19 happened and put such productions on hold.
Now, that reunion, titled “The One Where They Get Back Together” in the traditional style of every series episode, is coming out this month.
HBO Max announced Thursday that the special would premiere May 27 with a series of celebrity special guests and the full “Friends” cast: Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Matthew Perry. A teaser trailer shows the actors walking in slow motion on a studio lot.
The significance of that date? It’s the one-year anniversary of HBO Max, which became the new home for “Friends” binge-watching in 2020 after the series left Netflix.
News of the “Friends” reunion first hit in February 2020, shortly before COVID-19 would upend Hollywood and the world. Cast members were reported to be getting $2.5 million each to participate in the unscripted TV special (as per Variety).
The hit series debuted on NBC in 1994 and ended in 2004, after 10 seasons. By the last seasons, each cast member was being paid $1 million per episode.
For the reunion, the cast — Joey, Monica, Rachel, Ross, Chandler and Phoebe — gathered once again at the place where “Friends” was filmed, Stage 24 at the Warner Bros. Studio lot in Burbank, California.
Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, executive producers of the show, produced the special alongside Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc, Perry, and Schwimmer.
The special guests? They range from series regulars and guest stars like Christina Pickles (Monica and Ross’ mother, Judy Geller) and Elliott Gould (their father, Jack Geller); to James Michael Tyler (Gunther); Maggie Wheeler (Janice); Tom Selleck (ophthalmologist Dr. Richard Burke, who dated Monica); Larry Hankin (Mr. Heckles, Monica and Rachel’s downstairs neighbor); Reese Witherspoon (Rachel’s younger sister Jill Greene); and Thomas Lennon (Randall, Joey’s identical hand twin).
Other guests include celebrities like super fan David Beckham and fellow series enthuisasts Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, BTS, Mindy Kaling, Cindy Crawford, Kit Harington (Jon Snow from “Game of Thrones”), Nobel Prize laureate and activist Malala Yousafzai, James Corden and Cara Delevingne.
