Graduation season is a time to celebrate, see your family, and wonder what the hell 18-year-olds like for gifts these days. This year, it is also an opportunity to think about which celebrities were having kids two decades ago. A large crop of famous offspring are graduating high school right now, leaving us aghast at the unrelenting passage of time. Many of them are headed to esteemed institutes of higher education, where they can continue to learn, grow, and shock us with every new birthday. Here’s who’s who in this year’s graduating class.
Barron TrumpIn May, Donald Trump was granted a day off from his hush-money trial to attend the graduation of his youngest son, Barron Trump, who finished his high-school education at Oxbridge Academy, a private West Palm Beach school founded by Bill Koch. But where is Barron going to college? Trump said last year that his son was “thinking about” following in the family footsteps and heading to his own alma mater, University of Pennsylvania, but in April, the Daily Beast cited anonymous sources who claimed Barron planned to go to NYU.
The former president recently suggested Barron’s plans had changed due to pro-Palestine campus protests. “Six months ago you look at a college, and you sort of want a certain college,” he told Fox News, “and then you see all of these colleges are rioting, and maybe you want to go to a different kind of a college. Because there’s plenty of colleges that we also like that are different and they don’t riot.” He also described his son as a “very smart” and “very tall guy” who’s “pretty cool” and “gets into everywhere he goes.” Sounds like they hang out a lot.
Suri CruiseKatie Holmes and Tom Cruise’s daughter was born in 2006, and now she is 18 whole years old. Last week, she reportedly appeared in a TikTok video posted by one of her classmates at LaGuardia High School, where all the kids seem to be wearing sweatshirts of the schools they’re planning to go to. Suri’s institution of choice? Carnegie Mellon. The Daily Mail claims she is “leaning toward” studying fashion.
Violet AffleckJennifer Garner has shared many emotional posts about the fact that her daughter with Ben Affleck is graduating high school. (Ben, meanwhile, has a lot on his mind, but he is dutifully attending the necessary events, sometimes while reluctantly holding hands with J.Lo.) Where does Violet plan to foster her apparent interest in public health? In a photo that was posted to her school’s Instagram, where all these seniors also seem to be wearing their future schools’ sweatshirts, she’s reportedly wearing Yale merch. Go bulldogs.
Moses MartinAnother one of Gwyneth Paltrow’s kids with Chris Martin is all grown up. Two years after Apple Martin became a high-school grad and Vanderbilt University student (and, soon after, a Chanel girl), her younger brother, Moses, is also flying the coop. Paltrow and Martin were both seen consciously attending Moses’s graduation ceremony at the end of May, alongside Paltrow’s husband, Brad Falchuk, and her mother, Blythe Danner.
Moses is reportedly heading to Brown, and Paltrow, who commented “I’m sooooo with you” on Jennifer Garner’s emotional graduation Instagram, is feeling similarly panicked about seeing her youngest off to college. At an April Goop summit, she said the imminent graduation was “kind of giving me a nervous breakdown,” because her “identity has been being a mother.” On the other hand, she is excited about being able to “say yes to a girls’ weekend” without feeling “guilty.” She and Falchuk, whose son Brody is also heading to college next year, are reportedly planning to “downsize,” having listed their sprawling Brentwood home for $30 million in favor of a newly finished house in Montecito. Sounds like freedom to me.
Henry SamuelOne of Heidi Klum and Seal’s four children, Henry, graduated from Pacifica High School in Santa Monica this week, as evidenced extensively on Klum’s Instagram account. “College here we come,” she wrote — and though it’s not clear where he’s going, he seems to have some very proud (and famous) parents in his corner.
