Australian celebs and influencers are breathing a collective sigh of relief as the Instagram account dedicated to calling them out for their social media faux pas has announced it is shutting down once and for all.

Celeb Spellcheck, the Gossip Girl-esque anonymous account that mocks social media stars for everything from spelling mistakes to Photoshop mistakes, declared to its 166k following that it would be no more.

In an Instagram story on Sunday the account shared that after weighing up its options the time had come to say goodbye.

“This account has become too big, too powerful and too time consuming for me to enjoy running it anymore,” the story stated.

“There is no scandalous reason behind this decision — I’m not being threatened, sued or controlled in anyway. I will be permanently deleting the account tomorrow.”

The post finished thanking everyone for supporting the page.

While the premise of the account started innocently enough, it began to amass controversy in 2021 as its posts were called out for becoming toxic and negative, as well as for allowing online bullying in the comment section.

Some of the posts pushing the boundaries included video footage of celebs allegedly taking drugs, or admitting to taking drugs.

Former Perth-based model Tayla Damir joined the ranks of influencers to call out the account in January after she was featured for her misspelling of “tournament”. To her following she said the account opens the door for straight up bullying.

“It’s gone past the point of “keeping celebs accountable” and now bullying “celebs” for honest mistakes,” the post said.

Model Elyse Knowles also defended her misstep after her “wallah” misspelling of “voila” went viral after being picked up by US Instagram influencer The Fat Jewish, who has over 10.4 million followers.

“I make mistakes all the time (on social media). It’s who I am,” Knowles told Stellar magazine.

And while this isn’t the first time the account has threatened closure, it archived all of its posts from March 20 to 28 before republishing them, the finality of the post has most believing that its reign has come to an end.
