Steven Van Zandt knows New Jersey.
Now he’s using his Jersey cred to stump for Democratic Pennsylvania Senate candidate John Fetterman in what has become a time-honored tradition — reminding everyone Dr. Oz has been a longtime resident of Jersey.
“Yo! Dr. Oz! Stevie VZ here,” the singer-songwriter, E Street band member and actor from Middletown said in a video for the Fetterman campaign. “Whad’ya doin’ in Pennsylvania?”
Fetterman, 52, lieutenant governor of Pennsylvania, is running against celebrity physician Dr. Mehmet Oz, 62, former host of “The Dr. Oz Show.”
Oz, a Republican, lived in New Jersey for more than 30 years and owns a mansion in Cliffside Park. In 2020, he registered to vote in Pennsylvania when living at his in-laws’ home in Bryn Athyn, Montgomery County, and later announced that he would be running for a U.S. Senate seat in Pennsylvania, a “battleground” state in elections.
Van Zandt referenced the address change in the video, released Wednesday.
“Everybody knows you live in New Jersey and you’re just using your in laws’ address over there,” he said.
“And you do not wanna mess around with John Fetterman,” said Van Zandt, 71, who played Silvio Dante on “The Sopranos.”
“Trust me. You’re a little outta your league. Nobody wants to see you get embarrassed. So come on back to Jersey where you belong and we’ll have some fun. We’ll go to the beach. We’ll so surfing. You know ... c’mon.”
Earlier this month, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi from MTV’s “Jersey Shore” appeared in a Cameo video commissioned by the Fetterman campaign that has been viewed more than three million times.
“Hey Mehmet!!” she started the video.
“I heard that you moved from New Jersey to Pennsylvania to look for a new job,” she continued. “And personally I don’t know why anyone would wanna leave Jersey ‘cause it’s like the best place ever and we’re all hot messes.
“But I want to say best of luck to you,” said Polizzi, 34. “I know you’re away from home and you’re in a new place but Jersey will not forget you. I just wanna let you know. I will not forget you. And don’t worry, because you’ll be back home in Jersey soon. This is only temporary. So good luck. You got this! And Jersey loves you. Mwah!”
The Fetterman campaign also tweeted a video Wednesday featuring Fetterman and his wife, former Newark resident Gisele Barreto Fetterman, celebrating the dubious holiday “National New Jersey Day” by announcing a new billboard at the Betsy Ross Bridge.
“Now leaving New Jersey for Pennsylvania,” the billboard says, using the outline of each state. “... Just like Dr. Oz.”
The Fetterman campaign recently hired a banner plane to fly the message “Hey Dr. Oz, Welcome Home To N.J.!” across the Jersey Shore from Cape May to Brigantine.
