A triumphant return. Jeremy Renner was joined by his daughter, Ava, on his first red carpet since his near-fatal snowplow accident.
The Marvel actor, 52, attended the premiere of his show Rennervations on Tuesday, April 11, with Ava, 10, by his side. Renner used a cane for assistance when he arrived at the Westwood Regency Village Theatre in Los Angeles. He held onto his daughter’s hand and donned a pair of dark sunglasses.
The father-daughter duo, who wore matching blue ensembles for the event, posed for photos together as they celebrated the new Disney+ reality series. Renner used a motorized scooter as he completed press interviews.
While speaking to Variety, the California native explained that he was “really adamant” about not letting his injuries get in the way of his work. “I look a little beat up right now, but I promise you this show is what’s propelling me to get better and makes me want to get better every day,” he said on Tuesday. “I set out a goal to be walking this carpet. And here I am enjoying it. … I’m very excited right now because we’re here.”
Renner’s return to the red carpet comes three months after he was crushed by a snowplow in Reno, Nevada. He was airlifted to a nearby hospital on New Year’s Day to be treated for life-threatening injuries and blunt chest trauma.
A spokesperson confirmed to Us Weekly on January 2 that the Wind River star had “returned from surgery and remain[ed] in the intensive care unit in critical but stable condition.”
Renner shared a selfie from the hospital one day later, giving fans an update on his health. “Thank you all for your kind words. Im [sic] too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all,” he wrote.
The Avengers: Endgame actor, who shares Ava with ex-wife Sonni Pacheco, opened up about the accident during the Monday, April 10, episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! During the interview, which marked his first late-night appearance since undergoing surgery, Renner estimated that he broke “35 or so” bones in January.
“We kept discovering them as they were going along because they went from critical order of priority of what I’m going to die from or not. Six weeks later, they were finding another break, another break,” he recalled, adding that the crash was “a very very bad way to start the year.”
Renner noted that he felt “very lucky” to be alive, comparing the machinery to a “giant metal cookie roller.” He added: “My eye did pop out, that’s weird.” (On Tuesday night, Jimmy Kimmel joined Renner and his costars as he hosted a Q&A after the Rennervations screening.)
Earlier this month, the Hurt Locker star revealed during an emotional sit-down with Diane Sawyer that he was prepared to say goodbye to his family before making his recovery. “I’m writing down notes in my phone — the last words to my family,” he recalled of being in the hospital, adding that he was “awake through every moment” of the accident. “[I thought], ‘You’re not gonna kill me. No way.'”
