Time and time again, we've talked about how knit polos are a kind of style-flex hack that guarantee a clean, cool look. They look luxe but relaxed; put-together but not buttoned-up (even if, as polos, they all have buttons). Office, bar, farmer's market run, job interview, catch-up coffee with an old friend, first-date coffee with a potentially new “friend”—a knit polo is there for it all.

Celebrities—who, admittedly, don't always buy all their own clothes—have made the shirt ubiquitous in the last couple years. Here in 2024, the knit polo isn't going anywhere (except into your washing machine for another wear). You don't need to be nominated for an Oscar, have massive guns, or star in the world's biggest blockbusters to pull off a knit polo. And you've got plenty of variations to choose from: luxe, chill, fuzzy, slutty. Try 'em all.
To help, we've ID'ed a handful of the knit polos worn by the handsomest celebs—from Ryan Gosling to Donald Glover to Dwayne Johnson. You might not have their fame, fortune, or freakishly symmetrical faces, but you can damn well dress as well as they do.
The Low-Key Look: Ryan Gosling
During his whirlwind press tour for the billion-dollar-blockbuster Barbie, the Gos has been donning an impressive selection of King & Tuckfield knit polos-slash-cardigans. From Big Bird yellow knits to more muted retro options, the U.K.-based brand has been a favorite of Gosling's stylist Mark Avery, who told us that he “[loves] King & Tuckfield because the design is timeless and has vintage soul without feeling derivative or kitschy.” While the exact styles that the real-life Ken has donned over the course of months have mostly sold out, King & Tuckfield is constantly churning out fresh styles for future seasons.
A Luxed-Up King: Donald Glover
IRL, Donald Glover has become a legend of the red carpet. And in his latest show, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, he gets to wear enough flex-worthy knitwear to fill a Riva speedboat strafing across Lake Como. Here, he's wearing a creamy yellow ensemble from Zegna that's maybe not an everyday look for most of us—but is demonstrating two masterclass details for knit polo supremacy. The tuck plus the polo's hidden placket (as in, the buttons—or snaps, in this case—are covered by fabric) makes the whole operation feel ten times more debonair and elevated. And he's still more comfortable than anyone else within 100 yards, we're betting. That exact polo isn't in stock any longer, but Zegna's got you covered for your next soirée.
The Grandpa Grail: Cillian Murphy
While out promoting Oppenheimer, GQ March cover star Cillian Murphy borrowed a page from Gosling's style playbook: unbuttoned knit polo, tucked tee, chill as hell. But where Murphy makes it his own is in sizing up a bit so the outfit leans “eclectic grandpa”—while still looking A-list. His striped polo hails from U.K. brand YMC; it's the Rat Pack model, and comes in a wide array of funky patterns and materials. Collect 'em all.
Bigger Is Better: Callum Turner
Having had his fill of shearling-lined bomber jackets, Masters of the Air star Callum Turner has pivoted to stunning sweaters. He pulled up to BBC's The One Show donning a Oliver Spencer full-placket polo with a giant check pattern amid The Boys in the Boat promotion, and he was more recently seen in the Hungarian brand Nanushka's big, toasty beige polo. Its mostly-merino wool construction may not be quite as warm as shearling, but its oversized fit—complete with a wide, louche collar—has just as much presence.
Hot Fuzz: Jacob Elordi
Jacob Elordi makes the perfect pair with Callum Turner. Aside from their towering heights, the two have an affinity for oversized long-sleeve knit polos. Elordi wore a shaggy AMI joint during an interview with Jimmy Fallon in a dead-simple look that we'd wear everyday, and twice on Sundays. While his gray colorway is sold out (witness the power of an ascendant style god), at least AMI offers the soft polo in an equally sexy aquamarine color.
No-Hassle Handsomeness: Chris Evans
As a post-Captain America Chris Evans demonstrates, a well-tailored polo—like this one from King & Tuckfield—can do great things for your physique. Given the brand's affinity for making more tailored long-sleeve polos, you'd better believe it can knock the short-sleeves out of the ballpark (football pitch?) just as effortlessly. You can go full-placket like Evans did while promoting last year's Netflix film The Grey Man, or opt for a classic three-button with a similar knit construction.
The Stylist-Approved Polo: Dwayne Johnson
We're not talking out of school when we say that, for most leading men, there's a stylist in the wings doing the hard work of making them look good when the paparazzi are nearby. In particular, stylist Ilaria Urbinati gets a lot of credit for the knit polo's revival: she dresses Chris Evans, Donald Glover, and this exquisitely swole guy here, Dwayne Johnson. He's often wearing pieces from London-based Percival , a favorite around GQ HQ. And now Urbinati has a capsule collection with Percival that effectively distills her red carpet prowess into add-to-cart simplicity. The polos are all winners—and don't require massive pythons, either.
Bringing Sexy Back: Nick Jonas
As a group, the Jonas Brothers love a knit polo. Well, many knit polos. They're not just swapping a single knit polo. That said, if they were to go hard on a joint closet, we'd suggest they all just take turns with this Bode crochet shirt previously worn by youngest bro, Nick. Crochet shirts like this channel the peekaboo sexiness of crocheted bikinis from the ‘70s—which is why they’re absolutely on the “male slut” end of the spectrum. If you're a little nervous, you can layer it over a tank top, like Nick does here.
The Not-So-Knit Polo: Jeremy Allen White
Everyone's favorite television chef is a huge farmer's market rat who'll absolutely get a fit off while shopping for flowers alongside partner RosalÃa. One trip for a fresh bouquet found JAW wearing a very classic long-sleeve polo from the brand that effectively invented the shirt: Lacoste. (White's fascination with the brand's sweater vests prove the man loves his crocodile logo.) True, Lacoste's O.G. pique polo shirts aren't the luxe knit pieces we've been vibing on for this whole blog post, but listen—it's hard to go wrong hijacking Jeremy Allen White's off-duty enthusiasm for relaxed simplicity. Don't be surprised if your partner starts shouting “yes, chef” as you unpack the locally grown mushrooms.
