Someone get legal on the phone. Alexander Wang’s latest social-media campaign stars four of the biggest stars on the planet — or does it? If you’ve ever wondered how those celebrity look-alikes on TikTok make money, here’s part of the answer. To advertise the rerelease of Alexander Wang’s 2010s it-bag — the studded Rocco, now reborn as the Ricco — the brand hired doppelgängers of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kylie Jenner, and Ariana Grande to show off the “100% certified authentic” handbag.
You may remember the handbag in question from the mid-2010s, when that studded base bag was everywhere. That was also back when Alexander Wang, Puckish from the start, was one of New York Fashion Week’s most beloved and well-connected designers and before a series of sexual-assault accusations against him derailed his brand’s reputation. He has since expressed regret, and his business appears to be doing well, although real celebrities no longer wear his designs as often as they once did. But who needs real stars when @itsjustashley13, Taylor Swift look-alike Ashley Leechin, has plenty of free time on her hands?
