WORRIED I’m A Celeb bosses are beefing up the contestants basic food rations on the series so their bodies can cope with the freezing cold temperatures of North Wales.
The ITV show, which has swapped the Australian jungle for previously derelict Gwrych Castle, in Abergele, will also focus on unappetising British delicacies for the first time in it’s Bushtucker eating trials, including tripe and trotters.
Stars on the series, which kicks off in two weeks, are usually promised 700 calories through rice and beans, but production are dishing out more with oats so they can withstand the cold temperatures, which can drop to minus 5 degrees C.
It comes as stars including EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer, 28, TV host Vernon Kay, 46, Olympian Sir Mo Farah, 37, and soap star Shane Richie, 56, have been measured for warmer clothes to help them withstand cold winds.
A telly source said: “Producers are keen to celebrate British delicacies in the Bushtucker trials - both good and bad, from rough and ready tripe and trotters to traditions, like Black Pudding and rich, Welsh lamb, which non veggie contestants will found mouth-watering after starving on rations for weeks.
“This year the food in camp will be carefully worked out by nutritionists to make sure campmates are getting enough calories in the cold so they don’t burn through it and grind to a halt - which could be possible with the expected huge drop in temperature in Wales.
“Campmates could burn through twice as many calories in the cold so their daily food allowance will be adjusted - one bonus of being stuck in Wales by the cold Irish sea is that they’ll get more grub than ever before.
“Oats will star high on the menu as will rice, beans and potatoes - all ideal for stoking the furnace and keeping bodies’ warm - and it can all be topped up with some fat-rich delicacies and luxury top-ups.”
Meanwhile, our exclusive snaps show production team members within the grounds of the castles practicing with a bow and arrow, set for use in the trials.
