Could Sophie Schmidt be following in the footsteps of her multibillionaire ex-Google CEO father Eric Schmidt? She’s already launched Rest of the World, a New York-based journalism startup focused on technology and its impact on countries that receive little or no tech news coverage. Now, much like her dad — who’s widely known for buying and flipping ultra-high-end properties across the country — she’s hoisting a Hollywood Hills house she purchased just three years ago for $5.2 million back onto the market, asking nearly $6 million. Presumably Schmidt will soon upgrade to a larger and more lavish property — if she hasn’t already, of course.
Originally completed way back in 1938 but totally remodeled inside and out some years ago, the house was once owned by actress Robin Ruzan, ex-wife of actor/comedian Mike Myers. In 2016, Ruzan sold the property for $3.2 million to Nick Jonas, who held onto the bachelor pad for about a year before flipping it for $3.4 million. The buyer was a non-famous local man, who later sold the home to Schmidt in an off-market deal.
Tucked away on a compact 0.16-acre parcel, on a secluded cut-de-sac high above Sunset Boulevard, the Mediterranean-inspired residence is mostly hidden from the street by a lengthy gated driveway and soaring hedges. Coming in at a little more than 3,000 square feet, with four bedrooms and five bathrooms, the mini-compound offers sweeping city and ocean views from almost every room. Inside, the open-concept floor plan features modern interiors highlighted by a spacious living room sporting a wood-beamed ceiling, fireplace and French doors opening to a terrace.
A gourmet kitchen is decked out with a marble center island holding a wine cooler and high-end stainless appliances, and there’s also a sunken family room, plus a formal dining room adorned with a dangling chandelier and two sets of French doors leading to the grounds. Especially standing out upstairs is a wallpapered master suite, which includes a fireplace, sitting area, walk-in closet, and spa-like bath boasting dual vanities, an oval soaking tub and a standalone shower.
As for the bamboo-lined backyard, the compact spot packs in an infinity-edged plunge pool and spa, a barbecue area, fireplace and al fresco dining patio. Rounding it all out: a separate guesthouse/creative space equipped with a kitchen and bath.
Before Schmidt began developing her nonprofit website in 2018, she was employed as a public policy and communications manager at Uber Technologues. The Stanford and Harvard graduate also worked for Beijing-based smartphone firm Xiaomi Corp. and the Dubai office of Afghan media company Moby Group. Back in 2020, the tech heiress told the Wall Street Journal that she’d already invested $6 million from a family trust into Rest of the World, and was committed to spending as much as $60 million over the next decade to “sustain and expand the site, and shine a light on technology’s impact beyond developed Western countries.”
