NMC seeks to put social media curbs on celeb doctors - IndiaTimes

NEW DELHI: Celebrity doctors speaking on subjects beyond their area of expertise on social media will soon be a thing of the past. First-ever social media guidelines for doctors, framed by the National Medical Commission (NMC), states that doctors/Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) are allowed to share educational material for the information of the general public but it should be limited to their area of expertise.

The new guidelines also advise against discussing treatment or prescribing medicine to patients publically on social media platforms. "If a patient approaches doctors through social media, the doctor should guide the patient towards a telemedicine consultation or in-person consultation as the situation warrants," the social media guidelines notified by the NMC state.
The social media guidelines bar doctors from purchasing 'likes', 'followers' or paying money so that search algorithms lead to their name being listed at the top on apps that charge fees for higher ratings or soliciting patients, either directly or indirectly.

Dr Sanjeev Bagai, an avid social media user and chairman of Nephron Clinic, told TOI that the NMC guidelines were the need of the hour. "Buying of 'likes', 'followers' on social media is commonplace. Many doctors do it to enhance their clinical image and in the hope and anticipation that more followers would mean more patients. Such practice must stop," he said.
Dr Arun Gupta, president of the Delhi Medical Council, said many doctors have been indulging in unethical practice by directly soliciting patients through social media.
The NMC guideline on social media use among doctors is a part of the regulations called National Medical Commission Registered Medical Practitioner (Professional Conduct) Regulation, 2023. It mentions that soliciting patients directly or indirectly through social media is unethical. The guidelines also state that doctors should not post patients' photographs or scan images (CT/PET scans) on social media. "Once an image is posted on social media, it becomes data that is owned by the social media company or the general public," it says.
