It has hosted publicity-shy celebrities and was used as a set for the Godzilla vs Kong sequel. Now award-winning Alkira Resort House in Cape Tribulation has hit the market, and my family got to spend an entire weekend at the “spaceship house”.
Designed by visionary architect Charles Wright, Alkira is a cantilevered masterpiece positioned over a man-made lake filled with turtles, fish and exotic water lilies from South America.
When we arrived at the completely off-grid property via its rainforest tree-lined driveway, the whole car went silent – a rare feat in a 4WD with three boisterous kids.
Miss 6 proclaimed “it looks like a UFO”, and she was right.
Alkira looks like it could be on Mars, such is its futuristic facade.
It took the original owner, stamp collector and property developer Rob Perry, five years to design and build 1059sq m Alkira, which was completed in 2013.
It sits on an almost 30-hectare block of pure paradise with 600m of private Coral Sea beachfront.
“The plan was to build something that was part of the land, although we didn’t envisage something that would turn out to be world famous,” Mr Perry said when it sold in 2016.
It was hard to put your finger on what was so special about Alkira, with its bold design no mean feat in a location where everything has to be trucked in.
But the location, Cape Tribulation, should be on every persons bucket list, and if you can afford the $3000-plus a night price tag, it doesn’t get much better than Alkira.
We arrived on a Friday afternoon and every square inch of the place was investigated by the kids, with Master 12 overjoyed to have his own space away from his younger siblings.
There are six timber-clad bedrooms, each with their own cantilevered wing jutting out over the lake.
Each one also has its own marble ensuite and a balcony to take in the views, while the master suite has the added bonus of an outdoor spa.
The completely open living areas surround a pool that was based on the silhouette of the head on the “One Pound Jimmy” postage stamp issued in Australia in the 1950s.
The statement pool is surrounded by landscaped gardens and is open to the sky above.
The kids spent plenty of hours floating around on the giant pink flamingo, and playing Marco Polo as we sat back and watched on with a glass of bubbly.
The chic commercial kitchen has a walk-in refrigerator and freezer, quality appliances and island bench seating.

There are four lounge areas, each with their own big screen TVs, including one that I yelled at as the Matilda’s lost to England.
Other features include two dining spaces, an executive office, 2400-bottle temperature-controlled wine cellar, a gym, and a boardwalk to the private beach.
Fully furnished and equipped to comfortably accommodate 12 guests, Alkira can also be accessed by helicopter.
And we found the helipad when we set out of the ATVs to explore the property, spotting plenty of blue flashes as Ulysses butterflies danced in the rainforest canopy.
At the beach, the kids found shells, pumice and coconuts.
It is hard to know why anyone would want to be in any other part of the world.
When the current owners, who are based in Victoria, are not in residence, Alkira is operated as a boutique resort with on-site management.
It is listed with Queensland Sotheby’s International Realty agents Lynn Malone and Barbara Wolveridge.
Ms Malone said there had been “a number of celebrities and rich-listers” who had stayed at Alkira, an Aboriginal word for bright and sunny.
She said the vendors were selling as they hadn’t been able to visit the residence in about five years.
It is hard to believe, given the sheer beauty of the place.
Upon returning home, Master 3, face crumpled and with tears in his eyes, let out a wail and said: “Mummy, why can’t we go back to the spaceship house?”
Trying to explain to a 3-year-old that we don’t own the multimillion-dollar showstopper that we had just enjoyed for the weekend fell on deaf ears.
“But I have money. Can I give them that?” he said.
Sadly, the entirety of Master 3’s piggy-bank just wouldn’t cut it.
Alkira will go to auction on October 12 as part of Queensland Sotheby’s ‘The Collection’ event that will be held at its Breakfast Point Mercedes Benz showroom and offices.
